Mt Diablo Heat Training

I was out on Mt Diablo today, doing some good heat training. After Tina’s excellent week of training (over 200 miles and 16 hours), I have some catching up to do. Mt Diablo is excellent training for the heat and the climb is very much like a lot of the hills I’ll see, esp. Townes Pass. Morgan Territory was hot, even in the shade. Only four weeks to go, and I’m feeling good.

August 24, 2010--It was Hot Out There (Great Training)

On the training agenda for today— 3 x 10 min. intervals in 2.5hr. I knew I might need to amend this when my Garmin was reading 109’ about 5 miles into the ride. Still, the goal of these intense sessions is to increase my lactate threshold, which is a great thing. So I pounded out the prescribed wattage, testing to see what the heat would add/subtract from the interval. By 5 minutes, I was ready to puke! Not a surprise given the weather has been so cool this summer—no heat tolerance! Had to dial it back. Goal shifted to 2.5hr on the bike in 100’ ++ heat and maintaining whatever pace I could. Got home, could still walk, didn’t vomit..all good!
Learned I need major time in the sauna +/- consistently hot weather to train in before Oct.2.
Thanks for reading…Tina

Many lessons learned in October of 2009..

Onward to October 2-4, 2010! Mike and I are riding as partners this year with Michele Santilhano and Bernadette Lopes as crew. We are 100% psyched, training hard and planning our race. Our friends Tim Woudenberg (Werewolf) and David Jones (Donkey) are also racing this year. Should be an epic weekend! Thanks for reading. More updates as they come..

What happened in Death Valley ..wind and carnage.

Lyresa and I met 40+ mph headwinds on the floor of DV heading south. I got on my bike at Furnace Creek after she battled the wind from Stove Pipe Wells (after descending Towne Pass). I managed to settle in at about 6mph into the constant wind with frequent side gusts wrestling with me for control of my bike. After 4+hrs, I had gone ~20 miles. I could feel the wind getting even stronger. After Badwater, a huge (>50mph) gust hit me, took complete control of my bike, spun me around and across the road into the ditch on the other side. I couldn’t even walk my bike into the wind as other larger riders were trying to do. At that point I got in the van and we all rested for about an hour. The wind had not changed in direction or strength. We followed the lead of many other teams who DNF’d at that point. I’m really disappointed. So much preparation went into this. But there is always next year..

Bad News

Sad Tabby is sad. We had to DNF. Lyresa and Tina were going great, but we learned that Tabbies dislike one thing more than water, and that thing is gale force winds. It was blowing 25-35 mph in Death Valley, with gusts over 40. We’ll post more details later but we are now on the way back home.
